Best Portable Gas Grills Review

Weber Spirit E310 Liquid Propane Gas Grill

The reason why the Weber Spirit E310 deserves to be at the top of my list is because of its combination of all necessary features AND more. At a moderate price, you get more than what you pay for, which is why I recommend it as the best propane gas grill.

For starters, it has an amazing and sleek design that looks as good as it performs. The cooking grates are made of cast iron, and its lid and cook box are made of porcelain-enameled aerials, which are built to last while looking attractive. That way, it would retain even heat distribution nicely, cooking your food with quality in mind.

Furthermore, it’s easy to clean with its grease management system and even surfaces. I also appreciate its design, coming with six tool hooks and side tables to place your food and other ingredients for convenience. It even has the removable drop trays to make it easier to use, as well as the flavorizer bars which I believe helps in enhancing the smoky flavor of my meats.

Besides that, the grill itself is easy to move around, as it has the heavy duty caster wheels to move or store it without the hassle. The grill size is perfect and big enough for huge batches of food and groups of people as well. All these features combined make it such an enjoyable grill to keep using for years to come. My meats taste considerably better and I have no complaints about how it cooks, with even heat and such huge power.

Pros:

  • Removable drip tray
  • Has a grease management system
  • No cold spots and even heat distribution
  • Flavorizer bars to enhance meat flavor
  • Cool and sleek design
  • Holds heat under the lid well
  • Big enough for large groups
  • Heavy-duty wheels to move around
  • Easy to set up, good instructions

Cons:

  • Big gap at the cabinet’s back
  • Complaints of dents upon arrival

Cuisinart CGG-200 All Foods Tabletop Gas Grill

One of the best propane grill brands goes to the Cuisinart, with the CGG-200 being a great choice for many families on-the-go. I love this grill because of its portability and ease of storage, having the compact size and weight to bring around. It’s great to use for camping trips and the like because of its size and power.

This grill has the modular surface system, which has its panels connecting to the grill but is still easy to remove and place back, making it hassle-free to clean and store. It even has the removable drip tray for more convenience. Besides this, it offers excellent features such as the temperature gauge, folding side shelves, but comes without a propane tank.

As for its grilling abilities, I’m in love with it! It offers 12,000 BTU, which is more than enough for its size. Besides this, it has the twist-start ignition to easily start up the fire and power, as well as the quality cooking grates made of cast-iron for efficient heating and durability to cook for long. It’s cooked my meats evenly and smokes well with the heavy lid, though not the best, still adequate for its size and burner type.

My only gripe is that I wish it came with longer legs, so I’m able to use it on the patio outdoors rather than to place it on a table or higher surface. Despite this, I have no other major complaints and still believe that Cuisinart does it again with a quality grill made for trips.

Pros:

  • Excellent power for its compact size
  • Portable and was to bring outdoors
  • Large enough for eight people

How to Choose Good Portable Gas Grills

When selecting the best propane grills suitable for you and your household’s needs, you need to consider your individual wants and requirements that help make the grill even more useful. To help you out, here are the important factors to look into as you choose among my propane grill reviews!

The Propane Grill Size

One of the first things you need to consider when getting a good propane grill is its size. How big of a grill will you need and how many people will you accommodate? This all depends on how many people you’re grilling for, as well as the space you have at home.

Obviously, the larger the size, the bigger batches of food you can cook at once, though this may not matter for those who only cook for small groups. A common size would be around 32 inches, which gives enough space to cook well, but still good enough to fit most kitchens or outdoors. I like larger grills as you’re able to have more cooking versatility with it, cooking meats from one side and vegetables on another at different temperatures.

But again, this would all depend on if you have enough room for your chosen propane grill. Besides the cooking area, you have to consider the footprint as well, particularly those who have limited room. That’s why I like grills with collapsible side shelves and are easy to store as needed. Take note that your grill should be about at least two meters away from your house and inflammable things.

How Much BTU Is Required?

BTU (British thermal units) stands for the heat production of your chosen propane grill. This shows how much gas your grill would use and the amount of heat it can create. It does NOT show how fast or how better it can cook your food, though!

Take into consideration that you CAN’T grill steaks on a grill that offers less than 100 BTU per square inch. I highly recommend that you get one that offers more than 100 BTU per square inch, or 15 BTU for every square centimeter.

You can do the calculations by taking the given BTU then divide it by the cooking area’s size. For example:

A propane grill offers 54,000 BTU and its area is 65×44 cm. Calculate this by multiplying 65×64 and dividing that by 54,000. This equates to 18, which is more than 15 and adequate enough to cook meats.

How Many Burners Do You Need?

Propane grills actually have more than one burner, and it’s similar to stoves! Two burners will be able to feed over four hungry friends, while three burners satisfy eight people well. So consider how many people you’ll usually be feeding when using the grill when selecting the number of burners required.

While it might be a bit difficult getting even that distribution for those with two burners or less, there are compact propane grills with two burners, having a small cooking area to fit a home or balcony. I’m not discouraging you to get a girl with two burners though, as they still distribute heat adequately enough.

With that being said, if you choose one with less than three burners, just make sure that the burners are far from the grates, not too close to your meats. A good distance is around three to five inches apart.

What Are Flame Tamers?

Flame tamers are also known as flavoring bars or plates, located between the burner and cooking grids. These are what protect your burners from grease and drippings from both the meat and propane, lessening the chance of flare-ups. It also helps these drippings and grease vaporize, having that smoky flavor for delicious food.

I recommend that you get better flame tamer coverage, which is made from ceramic or heavy gauge stainless steel to resist corrosion well. After all, this part of the grill will receive a LOT of intense use, so you’ll want it strong and durable to last.

Burner Material and Heat Distribution

Did you know that there are different types of burners based on their material?

  • The top propane grills are made of stainless steel, which are known to last for years and still give off the coolest blue fire.
  • Cast iron burners are also solid and give your grill the desired heat and power it needs. However, this rusts quickly and it’s a bit tough protecting the material from the fat as it drips during cooking, causing rust.
  • Tin burners are the least recommended, found in simpler and cheaper grills but not being able to provide enough heat.

Besides its material, make sure that it offers the uniform and effective heat distribution, which is what makes your meat juicy and delicious.

Grill Body Material and Construction

The grill’s body and construction are crucial if you want it to last long and perform well.

  • Cast aluminum is one of the popular types to invest in, a traditional material as it’s resistant to rust and distributes heat well. Furthermore, they are durable and have good quality, depending on the aluminum grade and thickness.
  • Stainless steel is known to be the best for your grill, though you have to make sure that it’s made of quality stales steel. I recommend 304 models for stainless steel, which can withstand high temperature and rusts less, maintaining a glossy appearance.
  • Porcelain coated steel is also another material much uses, though not as popular. I highly recommend that you use either tailless steel or cast aluminum for both your grill body and frame for better assurance.

The propane grills’ lid and grates should also be made of stainless steel OR cast iron, with the lid being heavy enough to retain heat and secure your grill. I don’t recommend enamel-coated grates, as they are less durable.

Grill Brand and Warranty

Choosing the best propane grill brands is also crucial to ensure that you have a quality product with you! While there ARE other lesser known brands, I like going for more popular AND reputable brands which are known for their excellent quality products, particularly grills.

With that being said, I highly recommend that you go for good brands such as Weber, Coleman, Cuisinart, Camp Chef, as well as the other notable brands I have mentioned on my reviews above.

Furthermore, consider if the grill comes with a warranty as well. Of course, you’ll want your money’s worth, so make sure that it comes with the enticing and eligible warranty of at least ten years to be assured that your grill can be repaired in case of damage covered by the warranty.

Backup Ignition and Fat Drainage System

These are helpful features that usually come with a grill. A backup ignition is a safety feature that can be put to good use in case your primary ignition fails in igniting the gas and fire. It can be built to your grill, or you can purchase it separately.

Backup ignitions are helpful for those who live in colder weather with low temperatures or are more susceptible to rain and the like. These are great in making sparks in case your main ignition can’t power up the propane tank.

As for a fat drainage system, this helps avoid flare-ups, which are caused by fats that drop on the propane grill burners. Fat drainage systems are very helpful to maintain the grill and prevent scary flare-ups which can be painful or affect the meat’s cooking.

There should be an adequate area where you can empty fats rather than using bowls. This makes the grill much easier to clean and maintain. After all, you wouldn’t want to be wiping off an excess about of grease and fat after grilling.

Any Extra Features Needed?

For those who are looking for a new propane grill with useful features regardless of what they cook, focus on grills with the following:

  • Built-in thermostats are incredibly useful when grill so you know you aren’t overcooking your meats.
  • Have sturdy shelving on the griller’s sides to hold meat or other ingredients and condiments to make it more convenient to cook.
  • Grill covers are important to ensure that your griller is safe while not in use outside.

Here are extra grill features you won’t absolutely need, but may want to consider:

  • Smoke boxes are useful and advantageous, but only for pitmasters who have mastered the basics and now what they’re doing to achieve a smoky flavor.
  • Electric charcoal starters aren’t the most useful as they have chances of building an uneven fire and would burn out quickly.
  • Infrared burners which create sear marks on your meats.
  • Rotisseries don’t have many purposes unless you’re all about slow cooking and roasting. It’s quite difficult to start cooking with a rotisserie, and again, is best for specialists and experts.

With that being said, you might want to consider getting other extra accessories like a pizza stone, griddles, smoker boxers, and the like. Or if you don’t plan on availing these accessories just yet, make sure that the grill is compatible with any of the extra parts you might buy in the future. The accessories you need will depend on your cooking style and what you usually would grill.
